A Sacred Passage – Solo Sea Kayak Journey around Queen Charlotte Islands
Hayley Shephard
Using stunning images and entertaining story telling, Hayley will deliver a brief account of her solo sea kayak journey around the rich and wild coast of the remote Queen Charlotte Islands where her skills and courage were tested like they’ve never been before. This will be followed by a look into her next adventure, as she sets out to become the first person to attempt paddling alone around the storm-torn Sub-Antarctic Island of South Georgia for the Plight of the Albatross.
The Savage Island of South Georgia stands ultimately alone in the middle of the Southern Ocean. Treacherous seas constantly batter the steep rocky shores, 2000 meter peaks surround the area like guardians and glacial clad valleys carve frequently, releasing ancient ice plummeting to the sea. Fearless animals take shelter from the horrendous winds on the few accessible beaches and majestic Albatross glide effortlessly on the updrafts of these favorable ocean breezes. The entire essence of South Georgia had me spell bound on our first meeting and what followed was an unrelenting desire to experience and explore every inch of its shores which seem so exhaustively affected by weather. The only way to do this would be the approach I know best, to paddle it intimately by sea kayak and it would be done to help tell the devastating tale of the worlds rapidly declining Albatross populations. www.kayakingtosavealbatross.com |

Hayley Shephard

www.hayleyshephard.blogsport.com
Being born and raised in New Zealand, having owned, operated and lived on a 31ft sailboat and now residing on an island in the northern regions of Vancouver Island, it seems Hayley has spent her entire life surrounded by the sea.
Her profession as a teacher extended gradually into the wilderness and as a guide and naturalist, Hayley has lead people of all ages into the world’s richest natural environments on wilderness expeditions and nature tours.
Hayley leads expeditions in the far south on the frozen coastal edge of the Antarctic continent as well the Canadian High Arctic and Svalbard in the summer. She pilots vessels in the remote, northern inlets of the Pacific Northwest and guides people on excursions in grizzly and black bear habitat, as well as leading marine tours in the waterways where killer whales and humpback whales are frequently sighted. She compliments her guiding year with a short but very sweet month in Churchill as the Polar Bears are passing through this Sub-Arctic town. In Hayley’s earlier guiding career she lead 7-10 day kayaking expeditions in the coastal paradise of Baja in Mexico, and the inside passage of British Columbia, Canada.
For fun, Hayley takes off on extended kayak excursions which took her around Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands, alone. While guiding and gallivanting around islands by kayak, Hayley enjoys capturing the true essence and spontaneous splendor of nature through photography and writing. Her images and adventure articles have been published in various magazines; she has traveled the globe with entertaining slide shows and had published her very first children’s book entitled ‘Leave Only Footprints’.
Her next adventure, one not to be taken lightly, is a ‘World First’ attempt at solo sea kayaking around the storm torn Sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia for the Plight of the Albatross.

John Gamba
John lives with his family in Langley BC, with his wife and two girls; Isabella and Gabriella. A whitewater paddler, and outdoor adventurer in outback skiing and mountaineering, John began sea kayaking just 5 years ago. With the guidance of some of BC and Washington's leading paddling personalities, John has developed the advance skills he needed for soloing and guiding.
Paddling year round, John is involved in sea kayaking on the West Coast, from Prince Rupert, the Queen Charlottes, to the Sunshine and Oregon coasts. He frequents tidal races, surfing spots and solo weekend excursions around the San Juan & Gulf Islands and on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. John hope to complete his piecemeal solo circumnavigation of Vancouver Island in the coming year (family & work permitting). He continues to teach limited numbers of students safety skills, rolling, and surfing, and is involved in coaching in the near future. With a brief resume in sea kayaking, John is constantly open to experiencing new challenges in paddling and willing to share what he knows with other paddlers.

Steve and Cindy Scherrer
Paddling a canoe at age 10 got Steve hooked on watersports and he has been an enthusiast ever since. Cindy started paddling when she met Steve in 1983, which launched a love affair with paddling that continues to evolve. Whitewater, flatwater, kayaks, canoes, creekin’, squirt boats, competition, cata-rafting, sailing, kayak surfing, sea boating… it’s ALL good. They were co-founders of Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe in Portland, OR and worked the retail/ instruction/ guide scene for nearly 20 years. They sold the shop in 2004 and now work as an integral part of the Confluence Watersports team. Working closely with R and D fine tuning and testing the design of boats and gear allows them plenty of opportunity to paddle. Steve is an ACA Instructor Trainer Educator in Advanced Open Water and Cindy is an Open Water Instructor and is excited to share her experiences of the mental and physical challenges women face. Making their home in Ocean Park, Washington allows them to paddle year ‘round in one of the countries finest paddling environments. |
